Iraq is Not a Democracy

Mailiki is right. If the US is serious about Iraq being a sovereign democracy, then we can’t very well tell them we don’t like the way their elected leader is doing the job and they should try another. In fact, I think it would be pretty funny if Maliki called a press conference calling for Bush to be replaced because he’s failed at crafting a coherent Iraq strategy.

From the get-go, the entire notion that Iraq is a sovereign democracy has been a product of staggering imperial condescenion. It’s like putting a child on your lap while behind the wheel and telling her that she’s driving. It’s offensive. Iraq is occupied by the world’s most powerful army. Period. Those are not the conditions for “sovereignty.”
