Emergency! Emergency!

Verizon announces that over a two and a half year period they turned over phone records to the federal government 720 times without a federal warrant on an “emergency basis.” Why didn’t they make the government get a warrant or a court order? “The company said it does not determine the requests’ legality or necessity because to do so would slow efforts to save lives in criminal investigations.”

You know, like the ticking-time bomb scenario. Apparently, there were 720 such emergencies between January ‘05 and September ‘07. That works out to one every 1.4 days. Where’s Jack Bauer when you need him?
