From the Mailbag: The Usage Police

This was emailed to the Nation:

Please advise the young Mr. Chris Hayes that on Countdown tonight he
has conflated two terms that are used more precisely by his elders.

“Jury-rigged” is a nautical term, centuries old, to describe a
temporary or emergency repair.

“Jerry-built” is an army term from WWII describing temporary
construction.

“Jerry-rigged” is an abomination which implies that soldiers and
sailors have gotten drunk enough to try to communicate with each
other, but not too drunk to actually speak.

Yours very respectfully,

XXXXX
